The Helpful Thought Summary
Filling in the Helpful Thought Summary (table 12.1) takes a bit of time at first, but with practice it becomes much easier. To make this easier to understand we present a completed example in table 12.2. There are three main steps involved.
Example using the Helpful Thought Summary
Kathy is a 46-year-old woman with bipolar II disorder who works in advertising. She found the Helpful Thought Summary a convenient way of identifying and challenging her negative thinking in stressful situations and when she was becoming depressed.
She suspected that her thinking in many situations had been particularly negative recently. An example of this was when her friend Pete, was not very talkative at a dinner arrangement the previous evening, and left early. She interpreted this to mean that he wanted to end their relationship.
